Sete is small Venice Languedocienne which displays with its charms and its trumps. Between the Mount St Clair which overhangs it, the harbour of fishing at its feet and its sides, this small city in look sunny, crossed by its channels, is always in full effervescence.

A little of stories....

Create on royal decision in 1666 “Cette” born in the will of three men : Paul Riquet who searched a market on Mediterranean Sea for the channel Midi of the South of France, Louis XIV who searched a roadstead for its royal galleys and wished create a harbour of exportation for the products of Languedoc and the knight of Clerville to whom Colbert asked to find the most appropriate cape to build a harbour.

Sete, the island singular, invite you a life exceptional. Having quoted harbour, trawlers, pleasure boats, ferryboats, small boats coloured old city, markets, auction, festivals of music, popular or modern museums give the tempo. In August, at the St Louis festivities, the small port city dresses its nice finery and makes the soft eyes that will carry off battles.

Wikipedia Paul Valéry and Wikipedia Georges Brassens are the most famous town people. They rest there today. They have each their manner paid tribute to the beauty of this city which flirts with the sea, the garrigue, the grapevine and the ponds.

Seto/Blazono_Seto.png Culinary territory where the products of the sea and the ground found connivance. The see wolves and the cool sardines are savoured, the “tielle” is discovered which is with tomato and the cuttlefish coook in wooden fire. As for hills, country of the garrigue grapevines and the olive, raised grapes and pressed the flavoured oil which will come to liven up the cooked fish and quenched the thirst for all good setoises table.

The markets of Sete

  • Covered market Centrales : Every mornings from 6 h to 14 h (regional products, fish, shellfishes, fleur) street Gambetta
  • Walking to fleas : on Sunday morning, place of the Republic
  • Quay General Durand : commonly called quay of Navy, the restaurants are there succeeded. In the menu : fish of Mediterranean Sea and shellfishes of the Pont of Thau.
  • Bouzigues : capital of the oyster of the Pont of Thau. Restaurants and bistros are located in edge of pond.
  • Frontignan : country of the “muscat” color of gold which delights papilla but that must be consumed in moderation. Museum of the pond can be discovered also.
  • Marseillan : the visit of the cellars of Noilly Prat request the same rigour as the previous visit..

  • Gallo Romaine Villa of the Low Meadows. Next to basin of Thau, not far from the way Domitia, this Gallo Romaine villa is a true small palace on soil covered with polychrome richly decorated mosaic.
  • Abbey of Valmagne in Villeveyrac. Founded in 1138, this Cistercienne Abbey was one of the wealth of France.
  • Festivities

    On the steps of George Brassens : the tourist office has just created an audio route guided rather original. A promenade in his home town at 1 h 30.
